Shift successfully uncovered a hit-and-run fraud in auto insurance by leveraging prior SIU investigations and reconstructing claims. This allowed the insurer to deny the fraudulent claim, resulting in significant savings. Our advanced models connect complex data points, ensuring efficient and accurate fraud detection.
This video is part of a series of interesting cases, featuring several of our insurance-focused team of data scientists.

In this particular case, Shift's AI was able to identify that that the passengers involved had two prior SIU investigations, and that the vehicle itself also had a previous investigation. This triggered an alert and subsequent investigation that likely would have been missed with less advanced AI models. In the investigation, the insurer discovered that the passenger and driver had switched places at the very last second, and they were able to deny the claim.
Without Shift's AI, it would be extremely challenging to uncover such cases. Shift's AI is purpose-built for the insurance industry, and models are trained specifically for this type of reconstruction. Shift’s AI leverages thousands of intelligent rules and advanced data-linking techniques to accurately reconstruct people and vehicles across multiple claims—even when names are misspelled or data is incomplete. This deep data reconstruction allowed Shift to piece together the prior investigations involving both the passengers and the vehicle in this case. By intelligently matching these entities, Shift’s models were uniquely able to surface the connections that would have been nearly impossible to catch otherwise.
